The Representation of Indonesian Contemporary Art at Superdesign Show 2018 in Milan

Indonesian Contemporary Art Artura, a design firm, will be the sole representative of Indonesia at the Superdesign Show 2018 in Milan. The event, which will take place from April 17 to 22 at Superstudio Piu, Tortona, Italy, will showcase art and craft works from six Indonesian artists and craftspersons. The theme of the exhibition is "Inspired by Java," highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the most populated island in Indonesia. The curated collection features a variety of art and craft pieces made from everyday materials such as brass, copper mix-media ornaments, wax textiles, ceramic items, woodcut artworks, and gold jewelry. These contemporary pieces reflect the artists' perspectives and styles, combining traditional techniques with modern design. Diana Nazir, the initiator of ICAD (Indonesian Contemporary Art Artura), expressed that the Superdesign Show aligns with ICAD's focus on design and art. While the event is known for its emphasis on fashion and jewelry, ICAD aims to offer a more positive understanding of the concept of "blues." Rather than associating it with melancholy or sadness, ICAD presents a perspective that emphasizes the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and God. Visitors to the exhibition, titled "Java Blues," will have the opportunity to admire various art pieces. These include naturally dyed Javanese batik cloth and a contemporary interpretation of the gunungan decoration, traditionally used in Javanese shadow puppet performances. The gunungan, made of brass, adds a modern touch to this classic element. Among the other collections featured in "Java Blues" are a woodcut artwork titled "Sri Rejeki," symbolizing abundance, a batik-inspired Parang tableware set by Jenggala Ceramic, a mix-media sculpture titled "Tumbuh" (grow) that combines ceramic and resin, and gold jewelry by Tulola. The selected works are arranged in a way that tells a story, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of Indonesian contemporary art.
