The Legend of Malin Kundang: A Tale of Betrayal and Consequences

Long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatera, lived a woman and her son, Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby, and he had to live hard with his mother. Despite the hardships, Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent, and strong child. He usually went to the sea to catch fish and brought it to his mother or sold it in the town. One day, while Malin Kundang was sailing as usual, he witnessed a merchant's ship being raided by a small band of pirates. With his bravery and strength, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates and saved the ship. The grateful merchant, impressed by Malin Kundang's skills, asked him to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed, seeing this as an opportunity for a better life. Many years later, Malin Kundang had become a wealthy merchant with a huge ship, loads of trading goods, many ship crews, and a beautiful wife. During one of his journeys, his ship landed on a beach near his hometown. The villagers recognized him, and the news quickly spread: Malin Kundang had become a rich man and was back in town. His mother, after years of loneliness and longing, ran to the beach to meet her beloved son again. However, when the mother arrived, she found Malin Kundang standing in front of his well-dressed wife, his crews, and his own glory. In a heart-wrenching moment, Malin Kundang denied recognizing his mother, a poor and dirty woman. He insulted her, calling her a dirty and ugly peasant. His mother, devastated and enraged, begged him to acknowledge her for three times, but Malin Kundang remained stubborn and heartless. He ordered his crews to set sail, leaving his mother behind. Enraged by her son's betrayal, the mother cursed Malin Kundang, declaring that he would turn into a stone if he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang, blinded by his arrogance, laughed off the curse and set sail without remorse. Little did Malin Kundang know, the curse of his mother would soon come true. As his ship sailed further away from the shore, a powerful storm suddenly struck. The waves crashed against the ship, and in a moment of terror, Malin Kundang realized the consequences of his actions. As the storm raged on, his ship was destroyed, and Malin Kundang was turned into a stone, forever condemned to face the consequences of his betrayal.
