Istiqlal Mosque - The Pride of Indonesi
Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and a symbol of pride for the nation of Indonesia. It serves as a manifestation of gratitude to Allah SWT for the nation's successful fight for independence and the formation of the Republic of Indonesia. The mosque's name, Istiqlal, means freedom, which reflects the significance it holds for the Indonesian people. The idea for the construction of Istiqlal Mosque was proposed by Mr. KH. Wahid Hasyim, the Minister of Religion in 1950, and Mr. Anwar Tjokroaminoto, who later became the Chairman of the Istiqlal Mosque Foundation. They presented their idea to President DR. Ir. Sukarno, who fully supported the construction of the mosque. In 1954, President Sukarno was appointed as the Head of Technical Development for Istiqlal Mosque, actively participating in its activities, including serving as the Chairman of the Jury for the mockup contest. The significance of Istiqlal Mosque goes beyond its architectural grandeur. It represents the nation's struggle for independence and the unity of its Muslim-majority population. The mosque stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of the Indonesian people. Exercise 1: 1.
